“The machine can dream of flowers that only exist in its mind”. This is how the multimedia artist Refik Anadol explains how he used artificial intelligence to create a digital artwork, in tribute to Bulgari's famous icon, the serpent Serpenti.
Refik Anadol has thus trained machine learning algorithms to recognize millions of floral motifs in order to generate the unprecedented images of his immersive 3D sculpture, in an installation accessible to the public since October 8, in Milan.
More precisely, the artwork is "designed using algorithms to reproduce an image of nature generated by analyzing some 200 million pictures of nature and 160 million pictures of flowers, plus 120,000 images of snakes", explains the luxury house in its press release, adding: "The machine has the ability to learn what a flower is - its colors, patterns and shapes - and then imagine images that exist only in its memory and to restore in the form of a vibrant work of art.” Check out Refik Anadol talk about his work, “an alternative reality of nature,” in the video below.
The immersive installation Serpenti Metamorphosis is accessible until October 31, in Piazza Duomo, before becoming itinerant. The artwork will then be auctioned as an NFT. Refik Anadol also collaborated with Bulgari on Rainforest Serpenti, the Italian house's first fragrance created using AI.
