“The way our toys are designed, and how we reflect pop culture on our toys as a canvas is inspirational for fashion companies.” It is in these terms that Richard Dickson, president and Chief Operating Officer of Mattel, explained, last December, to the Women's Wear Daily, the link between the American toy company and the world of fashion, a link that he wishes to deepen even further this year, in particular through Barbie. It is in this context that WWD unveiled today CGI visuals of the famous doll and her companion Ken, dressed to the nines in pink and blue silhouettes of the French house Balmain. One can recognize, for example, the pagoda shoulders of the jackets, dear to the artistic director of Balmain, Olivier Rousteing (images below : ©Balmain).
The decor of the visuals is the same as that of Balmain's Fall-Winter 2021-2022 presentation, filmed at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport, in the hangars of Air France Industries, responsible for the maintenance and repair of the airline planes. "The models had the opportunity to walk along the wing of a Boeing 777-300, on the tarmac around an Airbus A350 and also in front of the Air France maintenance division's imposing infrastructure", notes the press release of the company, the day following the show. Balmain's travel-themed collection, inspired among other things by the astronauts costumes and the pilots uniforms, was unveiled on March 8 on the digital platform of the Paris Fashion Week, which closed yesterday.
