“I love this crown!” Opinions were quite strong, on Friday, for the first runway of Drag Race Holland, the Dutch version of RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise, America's famous drag queens contest. In question, the outfit of a candidate, the drag queen Ma’MaQueen, from Rotterdam, the second city of the Netherlands.
The electroluminescent diodes of her headdress did not charm the fashion designer Claes Iversen, who denounced its "Rotterdam fairground” look, “with all these colors". Obviously more responsive to the fashion tech appeal of LEDs, Fred van Leer, host of the show and drag queen for years, replied point blank that there was "nothing wrong with a Rotterdam lighted crown".
As for Ma'MaQueen, she may have dropped her crown on the podium, but she stayed fierce in her heels, calling all criticism "bullshit". Watch her on the runway with her luminous headdress below.
* Drag Race Holland is broadcasted, since Friday September 18, 2020, on the online streaming platforms Videoland in the Netherlands and Wow Presents Plus internationally.
