While technological advances in beauty tech make it possible to test the ingredients of cosmetic products without using animals, for instance, thanks to tissue engineering, by growing human skin cells, millions of mice, fish, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs and monkeys continue to suffer, in European laboratories, for shampoos, toothpastes and beauty products. How is this possible, when in 2009 the European Union banned cosmetic ingredient testing and in 2013 banned the sale of cosmetics that have been tested on animals? Franziska Grein, science policy advisor for the animal rights association PETA France, explains the root of the problem and how to act to put an end to animal testing for cosmetics: by signing the European Citizens' Initiative "Save Cruelty -Free Cosmetics”, before the end of August 2022.
