"Nostalgia is at the core of my work, the idea of reusing the past as a tool." It is in these terms that Benjamin Benmoyal describes, in a video published Monday by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, the philosophy of his collection presented, the same day, as part of Paris Fashion Week. A collection entitled It was better tomorrow, whose title perfectly illustrates the innovative upcycling approach of the Franco-Israeli fashion designer. Below, the video of the collection.
Benjamin Benmoyal has, in fact, developed an original and patented weaving technique, in collaboration with the fabric manufacturing company Malhia Kent: he collects VHS cassettes or audio cassettes and upcycles their magnetic tapes, mixing them with threads that he weaves to make his own fabrics. Discover his process, in the video below.
Benjamin Benmoyal, who won the LVMH Scholarship Grand Prix in 2018, graduated from Central Saint Martins in London, where he studied innovative methods to make sustainable fabrics. He is also one of the brands and stylists in residency at La Caserne, the ecological transition accelerator dedicated to the fashion and luxury sector which will open in Paris, in June 2021.
