“I like the aesthetics of Piñatex, because its non-regular fibers give movement to the material”. This is how, during the VeggieWorld fair on April 2, Morgane Guérin explained to Le Boudoir Numérique one of the reasons that led the young designer to choose pineapple alter-leather for the creation of the first collection of Oyan, her plant-based leather goods brand, founded in Paris a year ago.
Bag, wallet, card holder and shoulder strap, available in three colours, burgundy, black and off-white, are designed in France, in Paris, then made in a Portuguese workshop in the Porto region.
So, Oyan's items are made of Piñatex, an innovative material, developed by Carmen Hijosa, founder in 2013 of the startup Ananas Anam, which markets it. "The fibers come from the leaf of the pineapple, waste from the food production of the fruit", mentions Oyan website which specifies Piñatex’s benefits for the environment: "It therefore does not require any land for planting, water, pesticides or additional fertilizers. It also avoids the use of toxic chemicals or heavy metals.” The Piñatex is also certified cruelty-free for animals, it has been given the PETA-Approved vegan label, like the brand Oyan. But who better than Morgane Guérin to tell us about her creations? If you understand French, check it out in the video below, in which she'll explain everything to you.
